Frequently Asked Questions
My silos are in the middle of an area without any power, is there a solution for that?
We can include a solar system to keep the controller switched on. This will allow control decisions to be made and start a generator when needed (see also question 3)
I would like to increase the size of my fans but am weary about the cost associated with new cabling. Is there a low cost option?
Our new fans are addressable. This means that a single power cable can start all fans individually. All this need is a communication cable linking each fan. A major cost saving!
Can I use a generator and how would this work?
When the controller identifies that a fan needs to start, it will first of all start the generator. When power is detected, the fan will start. As soon as the power is no longer needed the generator is switched off after an adjustable time period.
Can I have my weighbridge integrated with the controller?
The Aeration Manager is an industrial controller with industrial communication links. As long as your weighbridge can communicate in Modbus, we can talk to it.
Can you calculate the fan size I need for my silos?
We can! All we need from you is what it is you want to do (drying, cooling or maintenance) and how much time you will allow the system to reach your target value. An this is grain type specific. Don’t expect a system designed for mung beans to work just as well when using chia seeds.
I do have enough power on site to have larger fans but is this just going to cost me more in energy for the same result?
No it is exactly the opposite. Larger fans will progress the front through the silo quicker thereby grabbing all available air. Once the front has moved through to the top, the fans will turn off and save you energy.
Some people suggest to use a variable speed fan. Is that something you would recommend?
Only if you use very large fans on a half empty silo. If inrush current is an issue, soft starters will take care of that as well and at much lower cost.
Are there any benefits in hanging down sensor cables in my silo and are there any issues with that?
The benefits are debatable. Grain is a very good insulator so you need many sensors to get a clear picture. You may also void the warranty on your silo if you do that.
My single fill lid will give me enough ventilation for the fans but I don’t like to leave it open all the time. What can I do?
The Aeration Manager has an automatic fill lid function that allows for the lid to be normally closed but will open when required prior to the fan starting.
